Better or Metaverse | mint

On Thursday, Hyundai opened reservations for its Venue N-line sport utility vehicle which is expected to launch in India early next month. Auto enthusiasts will have more to be excited about than the SUV. The launch will take place in the metaverse, and the Korean automaker, known for selling tech-laden cars, has prepared an app for that purpose. On it, potential customers will be offered various vehicle-related experiences and other virtual experiences. They could even test drive the new vehicle in the metaverse and customize it to their liking.

A bit fanciful it might sound, but Hyundai’s decision is important for the corporate legitimacy it lends to the idea of an entire virtual world as a place for real-world business. For marketers, it may look like another digital utility for online outreach. This, however, ignores why the concept has raised eyebrows. A private metaverse with its own cryptocurrency could aspire to fulfill a famous “Cyberspace Declaration of Independence” issued in 1996. The authority of elected governments over any virtual world consolidator could be challenged. It’s not just another marketing tool.
