Driver faces murder charge after hitting man with vehicle in violent attack

MESA, Ariz. (Arizona’s Family/Gray News) – Authorities in Arizona say a man is facing a murder charge after he used his car to run over and kill another man on Friday.

Mesa Police Department reports that John Lagana, 61, is charged with using his vehicle to intentionally run over an acquaintance, later identified as Christopher Heimer, 63, who told Lagana he could no longer park at his place.

Investigators said Lagana deliberately drove her car onto a sidewalk where Heimer was walking. Lagana hit Heimer and damaged mailboxes and landscaping while driving on the sidewalk.

Police say the 61-year-old then turned around to run over Heimer a second time before getting out of his vehicle and repeatedly stomping on the victim’s head.

The Arizona Family reports that a witness then fired a shot into the ground to make Lagana stop while police arrived to arrest him. Heimer was pronounced dead.

In an interview with detectives, Lagana said he knew Heimer, who let him park at his house because he was homeless.

Lagana allegedly told detectives that his ex-girlfriend lived at Heimer’s house and that he was in the area on Friday to help out a friend.

Detectives said Lagana then stopped answering their interview questions and asked for a lawyer.

The department said Lagana was jailed for first-degree murder.
