High gas prices aren’t stopping Memorial Day travelers

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — Drivers hit the road this Memorial Day weekend despite gas prices much higher than last year’s holiday.

On Monday, Renaldo Infante was returning home to South Florida from Orlando.

He stopped to refuel at a rest stop on the Florida Turnpike for $4.67 a gallon.

“A little pricey,” he said. “I have to do it.”

Nearly 35 million Americans have felt this, according to AAA, which predicted car travel would increase 4.6% during the holidays.

This Memorial Day weekend, the average gas price nationwide was $4.60 a gallon, according to GasBuddy.com.

This price was well above the $3.04 it was in 2021.

AAA reported the average gas price in Florida was $4.57 a gallon — up from $2.86 last Memorial Day.

Prices in Palm Beach County are consistently higher than statewide, currently averaging $4.71 per gallon.

The only drivers who did not pay attention to the price of gasoline were the owners of electric cars, which drove right past the pumps.
