The EV (electric vehicle) space is going to be crowded in India as several automakers are planning to enter the segment in the next 2-3 years. As local automakers Tata Motors and Mahindra & Mahindra are set to unveil three new electric vehicles in the coming months, Maruti Suzuki will showcase its first electric car sometime in 2025. South Korean automakers – Kia and Hyundai have also planned new electric vehicles in different price ranges.
According to a latest media report, Kia EV6 will be the brand’s first electric car in India which will debut in the first half of May 2022. Its bookings and deliveries could start around the Diwali season. The Hyundai Ioniq 5 will witness a market launch in the last weeks of October 2022. Here are the key product details we know so far.
The price and positioning of the two electric crossovers will be different. The new Kia EV will be brought in via CBU (Completely Built Unit) route and it is estimated to cost more than Rs 50 lakh. The company could initially introduce the fully loaded imported unit and gradually move to the CKD route. Hyundai’s new electric crossover, meanwhile, will be assembled at the brand’s facilities in Chennai. Its prices are expected to fall in the range of Rs 35 lakh – Rs 40 lakh.
The Kia EV6 GT-Line variant comes with a 77.4 kWh battery and dual e-AWD (all-wheel drive), offering longer range. It delivers a maximum power of 320 hp and 605 Nm of torque. There are two electric motors positioned one at each axle. It offers a range of approximately 425 kms.
In India, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 is likely to be offered with a 58 kWh battery and a single 125 kW electric motor. The RWD (rear wheel drive) variant develops a maximum power of 168 hp and 350 Nm of torque. The electric crossover promises a range of 384 km. The South Korean automaker could introduce its longer-range version with a 72.6 kWh battery.
