Top car news of the week: 2022 Perodua Alza, opening of reservations for Toyota Veloz, launch of the 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLC 300e and more

Earlier this week, the government announced the expiration of the SST rebate with a middle-of-the-road solution benefiting consumers as well as the government. This was followed by a significant increase in bookings by customers looking to save money. Perodua and Toyota also took the opportunity to open reservations for their highly anticipated minivans. Here are all the major events from the past week that you may have missed –

Opening of Perodua Alza 2022 reservations: Perodua has finally opened order reservations for the second-generation Alza based on the new Daihatsu Global Architecture. The upgraded MPV comes in three variants – X, H and AV, powered by a new 1.5-liter Dual VVT-i engine. The provisional price starts at 62,000 RM and goes up to 75,000 RM (without insurance and presale tax).

Opening of Toyota Veloz 2022 reservations: UMW Toyota also began accepting reservations for the new Veloz, replacing the long-running Avanza. Compared to the predecessor, it is said to be bigger, bolder and better and promises better driving performance with the new front-wheel-drive platform. It is offered in a single 1.5 A/T version priced at an estimated RM95,000 (on the road, excluding sales and service tax and insurance).

Launch of the 2022 BMW X5 xDrive45e: The locally assembled X5 xDrive45e M Sport plug-in hybrid has received an update in Malaysia. New features include BMW Laserlight headlights, rear side airbags, larger alloy wheels and Active Protection safety equipment. Due to the updates, the price of the SUV has increased to RM457,498.

Launch of the 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLC 300e: After teasing the GLC plug-in hybrid twice, Mercedes-Benz Malaysia finally launched the GLC 300e Coupe this week. Priced at RM374,074, the electrified model is powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol mill, electric motor and 13.5kWh battery. Still, all specifications are almost identical to the 300 Coupe 4Matic.

Mercedes-AMG GLB 35 receives an update: Along with the new GLC 300e, Mercedes-Benz also unveiled the updated GLB 35. The latest version differs from the predecessor with a new AMG Performance steering wheel, 360-degree camera system, MBUX interior assistant and surround lighting system. It is priced at RM392,582.

Launch of the new Mercedes-Benz Autohaus store: Hap Seng Star Group launched a new Mercedes-Benz Autohaus store in Setia Alam this week. This 7-story facility offers you sales, maintenance and a number of other modern conveniences like a self-serve cafe, a luxurious ladies’ powder room and more.

BMW Malaysia iCharging prices announced: This week, BMW Malaysia also confirmed the updated pay-per-use pricing structure for paying members of ChargEV. One can become a ChargEV member by paying RM240 per year and benefit from preferential charging rates and free access to all AC charging stations in the country.

2023 Honda CR-V interior revealed: Honda US has released another teaser for the 2023 CR-V, which previews the interior of the upcoming SUV. Scheduled to debut next month, the new CR-V will feature a premium cabin with new craftsmanship and premium touches and new technologies like a new standalone infotainment unit, new dashboard and a Qi wireless charger, etc.

The 2023 Peugeot 408 unveiled: Peugeot also introduced its funky, electric crossover to the global market this week. Dubbed the 408, the latest model underpins Stellantis’ EMP2 platform and the hottest design trend of the moment. It is expected to launch in Europe next year with three engine options (one petrol and two PHEVs).

BMW M3 Touring broken cover: To take on the Mercedes-AMG C63 and Audi RS4 Avant, BMW has unveiled the all-new M3 Touring on the international market. The car is based on the M3 xDrive Competition sedan and rides on the same 3.0-litre straight-six engine, automatic transmission and AWD system. It will first go on sale in the UK and Germany.

Vauxhall Corsa-e Anniversary Edition unveiled: To mark the completion of its 40 years in the automotive industry, Vauxhall this week introduced the Anniversary Edition of the Corsa-e. Priced at £31,000 (RM167,806), production of this special model is limited to just 100 units for sale exclusively in the UK.

Ford Focus to abandon: After discontinuing the Ford Mondeo, the American automaker is now set to end production of the long-running Focus in Europe. According to reports, the model will be discontinued in 2025 due to a shift towards crossover over conventional body styles.
